IINA HELLDAN

Immigration and residence permit specialist
Founder of Lupanainen

Iina Helldan, Lupanainen

I have over 20 years of experience working with immigrants in organizations, public services, sports clubs and social organizations.

I have trained thousands of professionals in various fields and have been a speaker at numerous events related to immigration, the service system and multicultural encounters.

As a trainer, it is important for me to make legislation, official processes and the Finnish service system understandable through real examples, practical experience and up-to-date information. I strive to combine research and statistical information with the everyday life in which people who have immigrated to the country, the professionals who work with them and employers operate on a daily basis.

The trainings are not about opinions but about information. My goal is to increase understanding, correct the most common misconceptions and provide practical, fact-based information about immigration and the Finnish service system to people who need it in their work or everyday life.

I have worked for over 20 years with people who have moved to Finland from other countries, international families, employers, young people and multicultural communities in organisations, public services, sports clubs and private social organisations.
My long experience in immigration-related work has given me a broad practical understanding of the Finnish immigration system, dealing with authorities and the challenges that people face when moving to Finland or building their lives here.

I have worked, among other things:

  • as a social councellor
  • as an immigration advisor
  • in projects focused on integration and employment promotion
  • as a trainer and expert
  • as an employee responsible for training and advocacy in a non-governmental organisation specialising in immigration issues

In addition, together with my working group, I have written a guide on guidance and counselling for immigrant clients, Crossroads and Dead Ends, Tienhaaroja ja umpikujia,  which deals with guidance and counselling for immigrant clients in the Finnish service system. Available only in Finnish.

Experience in very different situations
In my career, I have encountered many different challenging situations
that have dealt with the guidance and advice of immigrant clients in the Finnish service system.

My clients have included, among others:

  • specialists
  • students and researchers
  • entrepreneurs
  • employees
  • professional athletes and coaches
  • au pairs
  • international families
  • EU citizens
  • family members of Finnish citizens
  • asylum seekers and undocumented persons
  • former Finnish citizens or their descendants
  • future Finnish citizens

In my work, I have seen very different life situations and immigration processes – from simple applications to challenging and unclear situations where people need information, clear practical guidance and someone on their side in dealing with the authorities.
In practice, many situations are made easier when there is a person who knows the Finnish system, understands the immigration processes and can clarify the client's situation to the authorities or service providers if necessary.

Immigration is not only filling applications
For many, the most difficult thing about immigration is not the law itself, but the uncertainty, complex processes and not knowing what to do next.
That is why my job is not just about filling out applications or documents.
I help my clients:

  • to understand their own situation
  • to visualize their options
  • to identify potential risks
  • to communicate with the authorities
  • to proceed realistically in the Finnish system

I find it important that the client understands their own situation, their options and the possible impacts of their decisions on the future.

Where does the name Lupanainen come from?
The name of my company dates back to the time when I worked at the Ohjaamo Helsinki advice point as an immigration expert.
On the days when I was not there, clients often asked:
"Where is that Lupanainen [permit lady in Finnish], that woman who can helps with residence permit issues?"
The name stuck because it described my role so well. I help with all the residence permit issues and other problems and challenges.
I can offer my clients:

  • clear answers and explanations
  • practical help
  • and someone who will help you move forward even in difficult situations

How I work
As an entrepreneur, I personally handle all consultations, client cases and training.
My goal is to offer:

  • realistic and honest advice
  • individual service
  • clear communication without unnecessary bureaucratic language

If I don't know the answer right away, I will find out from reliable and official sources before giving the client an assessment of the situation.

Immigration-related decisions can affect a person's job, family, future and right to reside in the country.
That's why I consider it important that my clients receive information they can truly trust.
